Dr John Ozmen is an Australian educated and trained Specialist General Surgeon with both domestic and international sub-specialised training in Upper-GI and Bariatric surgery. He holds sub-specialty accreditation in Upper-GI surgery and has considerable experience in laparoscopic (“key hole”) surgery, especially in the fields of hernia surgery, upper-GI (reflux surgery, gallbladder), and particularly weight loss surgery (gastric sleeve, bypass).

Dr Ozmen completed his medical education at UNSW, graduating in 2001 with 1st Class Honours. He then went on to complete surgical training in Australia and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2011. Dr Ozmen then embarked on additional sub-specialised surgical training Fellowships in the following areas:

During his surgical training Fellowship in Belgium, he trained under luminary bariatric surgeon Dr Bruno Dillemans, who is regarded as one of the most experienced bariatric surgeon in the world (having performed over 10,000+ bariatric procedures).
Dr Ozmen is passionate about laparoscopic “keyhole” surgery, which offers patients less cosmetic scarring, less post-surgical pain and faster recovery times when compared to conventional “open” surgery.
Dr Ozmen has performed over 5,000+ laparoscopic operations; with over 1,500+ of them in the field of bariatric surgery (including lap band surgery, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and revisional procedures for failed bariatric surgery performed elsewhere).

Dr Ozmen has a strong interest in medical research and advancing new surgical treatments, and was lead author on a peer reviewed scientific study into hernia surgery – comparing post-surgery pain after laparoscopic hernia surgery using a self-gripping mesh versus conventional methods.
